First Confirmed Ebola Patient in Nigeria Evacuated to Switzerland

A medical flight has moved Nigeria’s only confirmed Ebola patient to Switzerland, but the evacuation does not end the outbreak response. The urgent test now is whether contact tracing and careful monitoring can keep the case contained.

A transfer, not an all-clear

The patient left Abuja for Switzerland on Monday, October 26, accompanied by her husband, a Swiss diplomat based in Nigeria. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Pate said her condition had improved significantly and that she was stable, conscious and able to communicate. But he cautioned that improvement did not mean she was no longer infectious, so strict precautions remained in force.

She was admitted to Geneva University Hospital; her husband, who has shown no symptoms, was placed in isolation at University Hospital Zurich. Swiss authorities said the hospitals were equipped to manage the situation and that there was no risk to the wider Swiss public. The evacuation is a transfer of care between prepared medical teams—not evidence that the infection has spread in Switzerland.
