Circular Financing and the AI ‘Closed Loop’
On September 21, 2026, Sona Asset Management published a striking analysis showing that the AI ecosystem—spanning 255 public companies including hyperscalers such as Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, and AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic—is locked in a circular financing structure. These firms finance, buy from, and invest in one another, creating a tightly interconnected “closed loop” of capital flows. A shock to any node in this network could cascade across the sector, especially impacting smaller neoclouds and data‑centre operators with high leverage and thin margins. Sona likens the dynamics to pre‑crisis mortgage market fragility, warning that “a single point of failure could ripple across the multitrillion‑dollar sector.”
Debt Surge and Leverage Risks
Central banks and financial stability authorities are increasingly highlighting the role of debt in amplifying AI sector vulnerabilities. The Bank of England reports that AI companies—particularly hyperscalers—have rapidly expanded their use of external financing, including investment‑grade debt, private credit, and structured finance, to fund infrastructure growth. As of early May 2026, hyperscalers accounted for over 15 percent of year‑to‑date investment‑grade issuance, up from just 3 percent at end‑2025. Barclays projects $240 billion in AI investment through IG credit in 2026 alone, compared with $150–170 billion typically issued by the six largest US banks annually.
