From Cheerleading to Center Field: A Rising Star
Just a year ago, Westerville Central senior Hayden Dennis cheered from the sidelines. Today, she lines up as center on the flag football field—a vivid emblem of how girls flag football has leapt from novelty to mainstream. Dennis joined her school’s team when it debuted in 2025, one of just three programs in the Columbus area, alongside Whitehall and Columbus School for Girls . Now she hopes to face “more local schools,” reflecting the sport’s rapid expansion.
OHSAA’s Landmark Vote and Sanctioning
In July 2025, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) board officially approved girls flag football as a sanctioned championship event, starting spring 2026 . That decision followed several years of groundwork—including regional leagues launched by the Cleveland Browns in Northeast Ohio and the Cincinnati Bengals in Southwest Ohio . The move placed Ohio among 17 states to sanction girls varsity flag football, with 22 states running pilot programs .
